  Connector Newsletter August 2022

Message from the Chair/CEO, Julia Demkowski CMC®

Hello IMC USA!

As promised, I am sharing progress on the One IMC USA initiative announced last June, which began the 2021- 2022 National BOD term. Last month, I shared a new organizational structure was complete. This reorganization is the first step in merging the chapters and committees with national. We are one national association. Chapters and Committees are extensions of and support the mission of the Institute of Management Consultants, USA. I look forward to having a full presentation and discussion with more details at the leadership summit during our 2022 National Conference in Kentucky.

The Why of Reorganizing IMC USA:

To be relevant now and going forward, we must change and focus on doing things differently. IMC USA has a long history. I encourage you to read about how it has evolved over the years in both good and not so good ways. As with many other associations, membership numbers are not where they have been, could be, and definitely should be. IMC USA is the sole certifying body for management consultants in the USA. Our bylaws state our mission very clearly:  we promote management consulting through certification, professional resources, and education. We are a non-profit, 501(c)6 organization. Our strategic plan supports and emphasizes the bylaws Mission of growth through certification, professional resources, and educational efforts.

But here we are in 2022. I am sure you are familiar with this quote from Albert Einstein

“Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over again, but expecting different results.”

Wouldn’t you agree that knowing this definition and continuing to do the same is just simply nuts! Yet, many continue to stay in a comfort zone and resist change.

Our why is that we must change, and we can change.

The How We Begin to Change

If you recall IMC USA adopted new bylaws at the end of the 2020 BOD Term, which was in May of 2021. This began the reorganization of IMC USA. Our bylaws identify standing and special committees deemed necessary for the operation and administration of the Institute.

The new organizational structure identifies the following committees to continue and are in support of the National Board of Directors:

  • ExCom
  • Ethics
  • ICMCI
  • Finance and Audit
  • Nominating
  • Marketing
  • Executive Director

Our bylaws state: “The purpose of the Institute shall be to promote excellence and ethics in management consulting through certification, education, and professional resources.” We are a membership-based association with the following committees who are in support of the mission of IMC USA:

  • Membership: CPC, Members, Affiliates, Membership Awards and Recognition
  • Professional Resources and Education: Academy, Conference, Membership Benefits and Services
  • CMC Committee: Certification, CMC Firms, Individuals CMC’s

As part of the reorganization, most committees will have a national board member who serves in a liaison position with committees. Please note these liaisons are not committee chairs but serve as a path for communication between the committees and the national board. Board Liaisons are required to attend committee meetings to serve as a link between the national board and the committee. There are also AMC Source staff liaisons who support committees.

We are currently revamping the Membership Committee. Stay tuned for exciting new ETV (Easy to Volunteer) opportunities while supporting membership and building relationships with our amazing members. Please contact Angela Dingle, Membership Committee Board Liaison if you are interested in being part of the committee. Noelle Company is our Staff Liaison.

Loraine Huchler is our Chair of Professional Resources and Education Committee, and Julia Demkowski is the Board Liaison. Lindy Rome is our staff liaison. Updates coming soon from this committee!

Our new CMC Committee has launched. This new committee will focus on promoting CMC’s and raising awareness. They are separate from the certification process. I am incredibly pleased to share a huge thank you to all who have volunteered to be a part of this committee. They are:

We still have work to do, however the rollout has begun and will continue through the rest of this year and early 2023. All volunteer leaders and individual interested in leadership will be invited to attend the leadership summit during the national conference. Anyone interested in getting more information on volunteer leadership positions please reach out to Gregory BrooksJulia Demkowski, or Angela Dingle

 Thursday, August 25, 2022

1:00 PM Eastern, 12:00 AM Central, 11:00 AM Mountain, and 10:00 AM Pacific

Are you currently facilitating strategic planning engagements with nonprofit organizations? Today, many nonprofits struggle to address diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) challenges in creating a more robust, mission-driven workforce. For consultants facilitating strategic planning, this workshop offers an overview of DEIB and how to reimagine the design of traditional strategic planning engagements with the inclusion of DEIB strategies.

Three learning objectives for this workshop include:

  • The value of DEIB integration in the strategic planning process
  • Supporting the ecosystem and the continuum of the DEIB journey within the strategic planning and implementation process
  • Generating practitioner strategies for DEIB integration, including the value add to clients

Speakers:

  • Tom Hayashi, CMC, Chief Capacity Building Officer, Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership
  • Alyson Parham Small, Founder and President, Partec Consulting Group Inc.

CMC Committee Newly Formed

The Certified Management Consultant ® (CMC®) designation remains the hallmark certification for those professionals who provide consulting services. Internationally recognized, IMC USA aims to make this credential more widely aware to the US consultant community and, consequently, grow the number of CMCs in America substantially within the next two years. To accomplish this goal, a group of IMC USA members formed the CMC® Committee to build awareness, communicate value, promote readiness through training and education, and raise adoption of the CMC® status by leveraging appropriate communication channels with the right messaging. More information about our work together will be communicated in the future.

Certified Management Consultant (CMC®)

CMC® Certification Committee and Volunteers

The CMC® Certification Committee consists primarily of volunteers who are stepping up to serve as CMC® Oral Examination panelists. Qualified CMC® members are welcomed and encouraged to serve as Oral Examination panelists.

The CMC® (Certified Management Consultant)  certification is awarded by the IMCUSA to consultants who have achieved a superior level of performance that includes:

 2022 CMC® Triennial Recertification Form

Recertification continues with more CMC's renewing their credential (https://imcu.memberclicks.net/cmc-renewal) this year. Since July 1, 2022, one singular CMC® Recertification Form has been adopted that adheres to the already authorized format from the IMCUSA Board of Directors.

After July 31, 2022, a $70 administrative charge will be added to process the candidate’s recertification form. If you do not recertify, your IMCUSA status will change from Certified Management Consultant (CMC®) to Professional. Click Here for more information on CMC® Recertification.

To purchase The Mastering Management Consulting Ethical Challenges Module, which satisfies the ethics requirements for CMC Recertification, please Click Here.

If you are a non-member or expired member, and you wish to join or renew, or apply for Certified Emeritus, please contact Noelle Campany at [email protected]

Thanks, again, for helping advance our IMC's unique credential: the CMC® (Certified Management Consultant).

How to WRITE a Thought Leadership Book
With book strategist Dan Janal

To showcase your brilliance and stand out from your competitors, you need to be a thought leader and for that, you need to write a book! But while all thought leadership books are business books, not all business books are thought leadership books.

What’s the difference? And how can you actually write one, successfully? Learn the answers to these questions and many more during this very special session with ghostwriter, book coach, developmental editor Dan Janal.

 Questions addressed include:

  • What are the benefits of writing a book to establish thought leadership?
  • What are some critical elements of a thought leadership book?
  • What thought leadership books can you model?
  • How long does your book need to be?
  • What if you don’t consider yourself a writer, what are your options?
  • How can you use your book to obtain more clients?

By the end of this session, you’ll be armed with the answers, enabling you to get on your way to authorship of your very own book and to a higher level of consulting as a genuine thought leader.

Your not-for-profit foundation continues to work on your behalf by improving management consulting. Your 501(c)3 was established about a decade ago to create awareness of the value of ethics and professionalism in consultants.  Most recently we announced the availability of scholarships to attend Consult-Con in November and two of your fellow student members are thankful for the opportunity, provided by you, to be with and learn from their new professional peers. The Foundation needs your help to continue enhancing your profession. Yes, this is an ask. We can’t improve without participation. There are many ways to give (tax deductible, of course), simply go to your IMCUSA account on the website, and navigate to the Foundation page and click on Donate. It is that easy to make a difference.

You can help by going to https://www.imcusa.org/foundation and making a tax-deductible contribution to raise the level of awareness of ethics in consulting and to equip professionals to practice management consulting with the highest ethics and professionalism.
