Julia Demkowski Message

On a visit to South Carolinas in 2021, I took my dad to his dentist. As we were waiting to go back, a framed piece hanging on the wall caught my attention. I took a photo of the frame. It read:

This is the beginning of a new day. You have been given this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be done forever. In its place is something that you have left behind. Let it be something good.

The message made me think of all our wonderful volunteers and the work each of us does in support of IMC USA. Not just national board members, but all committees and chapters too. We are each exchanging time from our personal lives. I believe we are doing something good with it. We are supporting each other and promoting our profession. We learn and we grow, even if we have years of experience as consultants. We are all volunteers. We have businesses to run and families to care for. We are at different stages of life and careers- yet we have a common bond of wanting to give back to IMC USA and the consulting industry. We give our time and talents to IMC USA so other consultants can one day discover the best-kept secret in management consulting- The Institute of Management Consultants.

When I started this journey in May of 2021, I had many things on my mind. The top of that list was raising awareness of IMC USA and our CMC® designation, with reciprocity in 47 countries.

The overall objective was to raise awareness of IMC USA as the sole certifying body for management consultants in the US and a trusted source for education for those seeking to learn or enhance their consulting skills. I believe we have made huge progress supporting that objective and doing something good for each day we volunteer.

For this objective, we started with an initial sprint team in August of 2021. From there we have:
Launched a CMC® Committee.

  • Launched a CMC® Firms Sprint
  • Increased Marketing of the CMC®
  • Completed Updates to the IMC USA Website, highlighting Certification.
  • Increased General Marketing
  • Planning in progress for 3 CMC® Town Halls to Update Members
  • Launched several programs in the Academy via the LMS

We are calling on all CMC’s® to get involved in many different ways. If you do nothing other than promote your individual CMC® status, you are helping in a tremendous way. I promote the CMC® on my website, business cards, speaking profile, proposals, email signature and speak of it in business settings. It is up to us to promote the standard. The more CMC’s® promote certification the more public awareness will increase. That is how the CFP® became a known certification to the point clients now ask, “are you a Certified Financial Planner™?”

I was speaking with Gregory Brooks one day about the vision for certification and the value of raising awareness of the CMC®. He quickly gave this example of the CFP®:

In the early 1990’s while serving an association financial service professionals, high net worth investors began asking whether their stockbroker or registered representative earned the Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) credential. This began a big shift in the financial service sector. The profession and future began to change. The CFP® required three years of intense study, an exam and continuing education. The entire profession began shifting from sales to planning. Investor satisfaction and performance improved, which continues today. As the CFP® grew, so did awareness. Even super bowl ads. Stockbrokers who were serious about their career and the care of their clients began the process of earning their CFP® to remain relevant in the profession.

The most impactful thing we can do for the Management Consulting Industry is to promote certification and IMC USA. All members of IMC USA are bound to our Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct. Can you imagine the impact that awareness alone can have on the industry, which is unfortunately suffering from the unethical practices of some? I genuinely believe now is the most important time for us to stand out from the crowd. Please consider attending the CMC Town Halls and watch for the announcement of dates.

We continue to look for a new Ethics Committee Chair. Mark Haas has filled this role for IMC USA for 20 years (that is a record!) and is ready to transition to a new leader. Please reach out to Julia Demkowski, Angela Dingle, or Gregory Brooks if you are interested in this leadership role. Requirements include being a CMC® in good standing, appropriate knowledge of business ethics and IMC USA Bylaws, Code of Ethics, and Code of Conduct. All interested members would go through a vetting process like those who apply for the National Board of Directors.

We want to thank all who participated in the second follow-up session of our Leadership Summit on May 1st. The last of the three follow-up sessions will be on June 5th.

Have you heard all the buzz about the ISO 20700? The program is now available on our LMS in the IMC USA Academy. We have also updated programs offered via the Academy; QuickStart and the MCC.

It has been an honor to serve as the IMC USA Chair and CEO for the past two years. I am proud of the work the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 Board of Directors has accomplished. I do believe we have created a clear path forward and I look forward to serving as Immediate Past Chair supporting Angela Dingle, CMC®. Angela is the right person at the right time for IMC USA!

Cheers to all!
Julia

CMC® Certification Committee and Volunteers
This year, we’re moving to a quarterly Oral Examination schedule that allows us to better serve our CMC® Applicants and Examiners. Again, the CMC® Certification Committee consists of qualified volunteers who are stepping up to serve as Panel Chairs and examiners and all must comprehend:

  • the Exam Panel Instructions (page 5) and
  • the Exam Orientation-Agenda Letter format that facilitates the CMC® Oral Exam Panel Chair to custom fit an agenda for the exam panelists to follow.

CMC Candidates who are awarded the CMC® (Certified Management Consultant) credential by the IMCUSA have demonstrated an exceptional level of performance that includes:

  • professional standards in technical competency and ethics,
  • global standards in consulting competencies,
  • professional and ethical behavior,
  • client and project management, and
  • personal conduct.

Our IMC USA has successfully addressed the ICMCI’s Triennial Assessment for awarding the CMC® credential. IMC International Members are encouraged to explore and consider earning the Global CMC® through the ICMCI (The International Council of Management Consulting Institutes). The ICMCI’s CMC-Global Institute link is located at https://www.cmcgi.org/content/cmc-designation.

2023 CMC® Triennial Recertification Form

Recertification continues with more CMC's renewing their credential this year. Since July 1, 2022, one singular CMC® Recertification Form has been adopted that adheres to the already authorized format from the IMCUSA Board of Directors.

In the future, following a July 31 deadline, a $70 administrative charge will be added to process any candidate’s recertification form. If you do not recertify, your IMCUSA status will be changed from Certified Management Consultant (CMC®) to Professional.

To purchase The Mastering Management Consulting "Ethical Challenges Module", which satisfies the ethics requirements for CMC Recertification, please visit this link.

If you are a non-member or expired member, and you wish to join or renew, or apply for Certified Emeritus, please contact Noelle Campany at [email protected].

For any other questions regarding CMC® Recertification, please contact Lindy Rome at [email protected].

Thanks, again, for helping advance our IMC's unique credential: the CMC® (Certified Management Consultant).

Gregory Lunde, CMC®-Emeritus
IMCUSA CMC® Certification Committee Chair

CMC® Committee

The CMC® Committee would like to report that we have an increasing amount of interest-form responses related to the Certified Management Consultant® (CMC) certification from our newly designed website pages. Despite the early phase of our marketing with the recent launch of the new website, we stand encouraged by this. We plan to continue to work with IMC USA staff in developing content and distributing information which seeks to provide value to consultants in their budding or growing practice. If you hold a CMC and wish to contribute to the body of knowledge, please contact CMC Committee Chair, Rich Cruz, at [email protected]
