In today's dynamic business landscape, the need for ethical management consulting is not just nice to have but a necessity.  At the core of ethical management consulting is the understanding that our recommendations and actions impact not just our clients but also their stakeholders and the broader society.

For Certified Management Consultants (CMCs)® the IMC USA Code of Ethics is not merely a set of guidelines; it's a commitment to integrity, competence, independence, objectivity, and excellence in all our professional endeavors. By upholding ethical standards, CMCs® ensure that our work brings about positive and sustainable change, creating a ripple effect that extends far beyond the boardroom. Clients trust us with their most critical challenges, and it is our ethical duty to provide them with unbiased, expert advice that serves their best interests.

Ethical consulting also means being mindful of the broader implications of our work. We must consider the political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental impacts of our recommendations and strive to create value not just for our clients but for the public and the profession as a whole. This requires a holistic approach that takes into account the long-term consequences of our actions.

Through our certification, trainings, enforceable Code of Ethics, and Code of Conduct, IMC USA is equipping our members with the tools and knowledge they need to navigate complex ethical dilemmas. However, our work is far from over. As the pace of change accelerates, so do the ethical challenges we face. It is imperative that we continue to uphold the highest ethical standards and lead by example in the management consulting profession.

Together, we can build a future where ethical management consulting is not just a goal but a reality.

Let's Elevate Trust in Management Consulting - Even When Other Professions' Ethical Ratings are Down

On January 22, 2024 Gallup published the results of a study in an article by Megan Brenan and Jeffrey M. Jones entitled, Ethics Ratings of Nearly All Professions Down in U.S.  The study conducted December 1-20, 2023, of 800 U.S. adults, measured the honesty and ethics of 23 professions and compared the data to its historical data starting in 1976. [NOTE: Management Consulting was NOT included in their list of professions.]

Their findings: the 800 participants believe the honesty and ethics of the professions included have declined by an average of six points since 2019 (Veterinarians were the exception because their profession was not included in the 2019 study.) Nurses are deemed most trustworthy, honest, and ethical in the study with Senators and then Members of Congress in the bottom two spots. The ONLY profession that saw an increase - though it was only a 1% point increase - of all 23 professions was Labor Union Leaders.

So what does this mean to us as management consultants? With trust seemingly eroding among most professions, now more than ever, we need to walk the walk and talk the talk of ethical management consulting. If we hope to attract new clients, deepen relationships with our clients, and provide greater outcomes for them, we need them to trust us. We need them to believe in us and our honesty. We need them to know we're ethical in how we work with them and in how we manage our businesses. We need to talk about, apply, and model the IMC USA enforceable Code of Ethics in our communications and interactions with them.

Let's start to talk comfortably, confidently, and intelligently about how we put trust, honesty, and ethical practices at the forefront of everything we do. Let's elevate trust in management consulting, even when trust in other professions is down.

The Institute of Management Consultants (IMC USA) offers management consultants in the United States the opportunity to become a Certified Management Consultant (CMC®) – an internationally recognized credential as the gold standard in business consulting certifications. The CMC® serves as a differentiator for consultants and provides their practice and their clients additional value within a framework of Business Insight & Aptitude, Practice Capabilities, Consultative Behavior, plus Ethics & Professional Conduct.

What it Takes to Be a CMC®

Achieving a management consultant certification is a worthwhile goal. To become certified, IMC USA has several requirements for eligibility and steps to ensure those who gain the CMC® certification have thoroughly presented their ability to work at a higher level among the current pool of consultants.

While this process can feel daunting, IMC provides education, tools and community to help raise the bar for each individual consultant and help the industry to elevate in ability, knowledge, and ethics.
