        Connector Newsletter January 2023

Message from the Chair/CEO, Julia Demkowski CMC®

Happy New Year IMC USA! I hope all are off to a fabulous start to 2023!

You have heard me say many times that IMC USA is one of the best kept secrets out there! We are the certifying body for management consultants with a purpose of supporting our members through certification, continuing education, and ethics. It is what separates us from other associations. We are an association for all consultants’ whether they are solo consultants or work with small or large firms. Membership in IMC USA is a path to certification for consultants looking to stand out from the crowd of other consultants. We will continue to spread this message in 2023 via new marketing and communication efforts. Stay tuned for announcements on how we will educate the business world about who we are and what it means to work with a CMC®.

We have some exciting news coming out for all CMC’s!

If you have been thinking about pursuing certification, now is the time! As mentioned in previous newsletters in 2022, we have implemented improvements to our CMC Application and CMC Panel processes based on recommendations from two sprint teams. These sprint teams did a fantastic job to make the process more efficient while keeping the standards in place. As a result of this work, we created a new committee, the CMC Committee. This committee has been very productive and is currently working on raising awareness of certification and of course, IMC USA.
Positive Changes from International

As a member of IMC USA, you likely know that we are one of 51 countries which are members of the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes (ICMCI). They recently adopted an expanded Competence Framework. Your national board of directors voted in favor of those changes to ensure we are in alignment with our international peers, including reciprocity of the CMC®. The changes to the Competence Framework are exciting and we are sharing three key parts herein. If you are interested in the details behind this summary, please go to www.icmci.org for complete details of the Competence Framework. If you were at Consult-Con in Louisville, you likely noticed some of these changes in the workshops.

Definition of Management Consultant:
First, ICMCI has redefined management consulting to be more inclusive. Their definition (which we also adopted) is: “A management consultant shall be defined as [1] one who helps organizations to solve issues, create value, maximize growth and improve performance [2] through the application of their knowledge, techniques and assets [3] to provide objective advice, expertise and specialist skills which the organization may be lacking.”

Further, they add: “This definition shall include those consultants who work alone as a singleton, as a partner or employee of a practice or firm and those who work as internal consultants in an organization or government body whose primary purpose is not management consultancy.”

Code of Professional Conduct:
The new Code of Conduct is over and above IMC USA’s Code of Ethics and is not meant to subsume or replace it, rather to be in addition to the Code of Ethics to which you, as a member of IMC USA sign adherence to. The Code of Conduct describes the rules of engagement that management consultants have in the greater community as well as the behaviors that are mandatory in our professional roles. It has five main parts to our responsibility – to the Client, to Society, to the Organization we work for, to those we work with, and to the consultancy profession itself. Each of the five has multiple sub responsibilities.

We will be rewriting it to fit IMC USA over the next month, particularly for spelling differences across the world (i.e., ‘organization’ instead of ‘organization’). Like our powerful and institutionalized Code of Ethics, you will be asked annually to sign acceptance to the code.

Competency Framework:
The competence framework is rearranged and expanded. The rearrangement simply moved subparts to different competencies. The expanded competence involves an expanded section on obligations to Society. Of note are the two sections of G1, Sustainability & Corporate and Social Responsibility.

All these, and perhaps other changes will be rolled out over the next several months, as we update the website and other collateral material. You will be noticing that these changes are accompanied by changes in some graphics.

We are excited about these changes and hope you see there are positive implications embedded to you, your practice, and how you market and conduct engagements. Consider, at a minimum, how adherence to a Code of Ethics, and now a Code of Conduct, separates you and your practice from other consultants in the eyes of your prospect!

IMC USA is one of the best kept secrets out there! We must do more to educate the business world about who we are and what it means to work with a CMC®.

Looking for an ETV (Easy to Volunteer) opportunity? We are calling on all CMCs to participate in promoting Certification and consider being a part of Academy classes, CMC Boot Camps, CMC Panels, committee members, and more. Please reach out to:
